Something in the house is doing what it should not. Leaking, tripping, humming, or blowing air that is the wrong temperature. Before you can decide whether to fix it or pay someone, you need to know what is actually wrong.
Every guide in this section starts from the symptom rather than the component, because the symptom is all you have at the point you go looking. Each one narrows to a cause, tells you which cases are safe to handle yourself, and gives the price of the ones that are not.
How to Use These Guides
Start with the page matching what you are seeing, not what you think has failed. A puddle under a water heater has five possible sources ranging from a twenty-dollar valve to a dead tank, and the diagnosis is a matter of looking in the right place rather than guessing.
Nearly every page here follows the same shape: make it safe first, narrow the cause by observing when and how the fault happens, then decide between a repair you can do and a call you should make.
The Pattern That Solves Most Faults
Across plumbing, electrical and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), one diagnostic principle does most of the work: when the fault happens tells you what it is.
A breaker that trips instantly with nothing plugged in is a short circuit. One that trips twenty minutes into vacuuming is an overload. Those are entirely different problems with entirely different fixes, and the timing separated them before anyone opened a panel.
The same logic runs through the rest. A toilet that runs constantly is a different fault from one that refills briefly every few hours. An air conditioner that never cools differs from one that cools then stops. Note the pattern before you start replacing parts.
When to Stop and Call Someone
Most household faults are safe to investigate. A short list is not, and the distinction is worth taking seriously because the failure modes are fire, flooding and carbon monoxide rather than a wasted afternoon.
- Any burning smell, scorch mark, or warmth at an outlet, switch or panel. That is arcing, and it is a fire in progress.
- A carbon monoxide alarm, or a smell of gas. Leave the building and call from outside. Do not troubleshoot.
- Water coming from the body of a tank rather than a fitting. It will get worse, sometimes suddenly.
- A breaker that trips again immediately after resetting with nothing connected.
- Anything inside an electrical panel. Busbars stay live with the main breaker off.
What These Guides Cost You to Act on
A recurring theme across this section is that the cheap fix and the expensive fix often present identically. A humming garbage disposal is five minutes with a hex key or a new unit. A leaking water heater is a twenty-dollar drain valve or a two-thousand-dollar replacement.
That is the reason to diagnose before you call. A plumber attending a jammed disposal still charges a call-out and a one-hour minimum, and the same visit for a failed motor is money well spent. Knowing which one you have before you pick up the phone is worth more than any single repair skill.
What to Have Before You Start
A short list of things turns most of these guides from reading into doing, and none of it is specialist.
A non-contact voltage tester is the single most valuable item, because the question it answers, is this dead, comes up in almost every electrical fault and it answers it without going near live metal. A flashlight matters more than it sounds, since most faults are behind or underneath something. A phone camera is the best diagnostic tool most people own: photograph wiring before disconnecting it, photograph the data plate on any appliance, and photograph the fault itself so you can describe it accurately to a trade.
Beyond that, a basic screwdriver set, an adjustable wrench, and a bucket. The bucket is not a joke. A surprising share of plumbing diagnosis involves catching water while you look at where it came from.
Describing a Fault to a Tradesperson
What you say on the phone determines whether the right person turns up with the right part. Three details do most of the work.
- What it does and when. "Trips when the dryer starts" is a diagnosis. "Electrical problem" is not.
- The make, model and age from the data plate. It decides whether they bring the part.
- What you have already tried, so they do not repeat it on your time.
Fix the Cause Rather Than the Symptom
A repeating theme worth stating on its own. A great many household faults are a protective device doing its job, and the temptation is to silence the device rather than address what triggered it.
A breaker that keeps tripping, a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) that will not stay reset, a T&P valve dripping on a water heater, a furnace locking out after a few seconds. Every one of those is a report. Fitting a larger breaker, taping a handle, capping a discharge pipe or repeatedly resetting a lockout removes the report while leaving the condition in place. That is how a nuisance becomes a fire or a flood.
If a protective device keeps operating, the question is always what it is detecting, never how to stop it detecting.
