A single dead outlet almost never means what people assume. The breaker is the first place everyone looks and it is rarely the answer, because a tripped breaker normally kills a whole run of outlets and lights rather than one socket.
The most common cause by a wide margin is a GFCI that has tripped in a completely different room. Work the checks in the order below and most dead outlets resolve in under ten minutes without tools.
Check in This Order
Each step is quick, and the order is deliberate. It goes from most likely to least.
- Test the outlet properly. Try a lamp you know works, in both sockets of the receptacle. A failed device or a bad phone charger fools people constantly.
- Find the ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). Look in bathrooms, the kitchen, the garage, the basement, the laundry and outdoors for an outlet with Test and Reset buttons. One GFCI commonly protects several ordinary outlets downstream of it, often in other rooms. Press Reset firmly, you should feel a click.
- Check the breaker panel. A tripped breaker usually sits slightly out of line with its neighbors, in a middle position. Push it fully off first, then back on. Flipping it straight from middle to on frequently does not reset it, which is why people conclude the breaker is fine when it is not.
- Check for a wall switch. In many living rooms and bedrooms, one half of one receptacle is switched. If the outlet is dead only sometimes, try every switch in the room.
- Check the other outlets nearby. One dead outlet points at that device or its wiring. Several dead outlets points at a breaker, a GFCI, or a failed connection upstream.
GFCI protection travels downstream. A bathroom GFCI can control garage and outdoor outlets on the same circuit, which is why the dead socket and the tripped button are often nowhere near each other. Check every GFCI in the house before concluding there is not one.

Why One Outlet Dies on Its Own
When everything else on the circuit works, the fault is at or just before that receptacle. There are three usual causes.
The receptacle has failed. The internal contacts wear out, particularly on outlets that get plugged and unplugged constantly, or that have carried a heavy load like a heater for years. Cheap builder-grade receptacles fail this way well within the life of a house.
A back-stab connection has let go. Many receptacles allow the wire to be pushed into a spring-loaded hole on the back rather than looped under a screw. Those connections loosen over time with heat cycling. This is also the failure that most often shows up as an intermittent outlet, and it is a genuine fire risk because a loose connection arcs.
The connection upstream failed. Outlets are usually daisy-chained, so a loose wire in one box kills everything after it. If several outlets went dead together in a line, look at the last working one. The fault is often in that box.
Any discoloration, scorching, buzzing, a burning smell, or a receptacle that is warm to the touch means stop. Turn off the breaker for that circuit and call an electrician. Those are signs of arcing, which is a fire in progress rather than an inconvenience.
Replacing a Receptacle: What It Involves
Swapping a failed outlet is within reach for a competent DIYer in many jurisdictions, though some require licensed work for anything inside a box. Getting the wiring right is easy. Proving the circuit is dead is the step people skip.
Turn off the breaker, then prove the outlet is dead before touching anything. Test a socket you know is live, test the one you are working on, then test the known-live socket again. That sequence catches a flat battery in the tester, which a single reading will not. A two-pole contact tester is more reliable here than a non-contact pen, because a pen can miss live wiring in a metal box or a deep one. Never rely on the breaker label. Mislabeled panels are common, and the outlet may be fed from a circuit other than the one you switched off.
When you fit the new receptacle, use the screw terminals rather than the back-stab holes, looping the wire clockwise so tightening pulls it in. A screw terminal lasts decades. A back-stabbed wire works loose again.

When to Stop and Call Someone
Most dead outlets are trivial. These are not, and the distinction is worth taking seriously.
- Any burning smell, scorch mark, discoloration or warmth at a receptacle or in the panel.
- A breaker that trips again straight after resetting.
- A GFCI that will not reset with nothing plugged in.
- Outlets that work intermittently. That is very often a loose, arcing connection.
- Any outlet with only two slots and no ground, if you are replacing it. Ungrounded circuits have specific code requirements about what may be fitted.
- Aluminum branch wiring, common in homes built in the 1960s and 70s. It needs connectors and techniques specific to aluminum, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission has linked it to a raised fire risk. If your home has it, book an electrician to check every device connection before you open an outlet yourself.
