Set the thermostat fan from On to Auto. That is the most common cause of a furnace blowing cold air, it takes ten seconds, and it costs nothing. With the fan set to On the blower runs between burner cycles and pushes unheated air out of the vents.
If that is not it, the remaining causes are few. What the furnace does tells you which one. Short cycling, failing to ignite and running constantly are three different faults.
Check the Fan Setting First
On the thermostat, the fan has two settings. Auto runs the blower only when the burner is producing heat. On runs it continuously.
With the fan on On, you get warm air while the burner fires and room-temperature or cooler air the rest of the time. Standing at a vent between cycles, that reads as a furnace blowing cold air. Set it to Auto and see whether the problem disappears.
Also confirm the thermostat is set to Heat, that the setpoint is above room temperature, and, on a battery-powered thermostat, that the batteries are not flat. A dying thermostat battery produces genuinely strange intermittent behavior.
Then the Filter
A clogged filter restricts airflow across the heat exchanger, the exchanger overheats, and a high-limit switch shuts the burner down as a safety measure while leaving the blower running to carry the heat away. The result is exactly what you are seeing: air moving, no heat in it.
This is the same failure mode as a frozen air-conditioner coil in summer. One restriction, two seasonal symptoms. If the furnace runs for a few minutes, cuts out, and the fan keeps blowing cold, a dirty filter is the first suspect.
A furnace that fires, runs briefly, shuts the burner off and keeps blowing is describing an overheat shutdown. Change the filter and open every vent before assuming anything expensive.
Ignition: Pilot Lights and Modern Igniters
How your furnace lights depends on its age, and the two behave differently when they fail.
Older furnaces with a standing pilot keep a small flame burning permanently. If it goes out there is no ignition source and the burner cannot light. Relighting instructions are printed on a label inside the furnace door. Follow them exactly, and note the step people skip: turn the gas control to Off and wait a full five minutes before you try to light it, so any unburnt gas clears the burner compartment. If the pilot lights but will not stay lit once you release the knob, the thermocouple has failed. That is a safety sensor which proves the flame is present, and it is an inexpensive part.
Newer furnaces use an electronic igniter, either a hot surface igniter that glows or a spark igniter. Hot surface igniters are brittle and are a routine wear item, typically lasting three to seven years. The symptom is a furnace that goes through its startup sequence, the inducer fan runs, and then nothing lights and it locks out.
Both furnace types also have a flame sensor, a thin metal rod in the burner flame. It oxidises over time, and once it can no longer detect the flame the furnace shuts the gas off within seconds of lighting. The classic symptom is a burner that ignites, burns for five to ten seconds, then goes out, repeatedly. Cleaning the sensor with fine abrasive is a standard, inexpensive service item.

- Read the diagnostic light. Most furnaces made in the last twenty-five years have an LED behind a small window on the front panel that flashes a fault code, with the key printed on the door label. It will usually tell you the answer directly.
- Check the furnace door switch. Many units will not run at all with the access panel not fully seated. It is a genuinely common cause of a dead furnace after someone has changed a filter.

The Two Things That Are Not Maintenance
A cracked heat exchanger is the serious one. It can allow combustion gases including carbon monoxide into the air being circulated through the house. Signs include soot, an unusual smell, a flame that flickers or changes color when the blower starts, and, most importantly, a carbon monoxide alarm. A furnace with a suspected cracked exchanger should be shut down and inspected, not run while you decide. Repair is rarely economic. It usually means replacement.
No gas supply is the simple one. If the gas stove also will not light, the problem is the supply rather than the furnace. Check whether the gas valve at the furnace has been closed, and whether the account is in good standing.
If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, or you smell gas, leave the building and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside. Do not troubleshoot. Every home with a fuel-burning appliance should have working CO alarms, and this is exactly the failure they exist for.
