The short answer surprises people: for a residential circuit, the National Electrical Code (NEC) sets no maximum number of receptacles. You can legally chain twenty outlets off one 20-amp breaker in a house, and inspectors will pass it.
The number people quote, usually ten, comes from a commercial rule applied to homes, and from a sensible instinct that at some point the circuit gets overloaded. That instinct is right, but the limit it points at is watts, not outlet count.
What the Code Actually Says
For dwelling units, the NEC does not cap receptacles per circuit. It handles the problem a different way: rather than counting outlets, it requires enough circuits overall, calculated from the floor area of the home, and it mandates dedicated circuits for the loads that matter.
For commercial and other non-dwelling occupancies, the NEC does assign a load to each receptacle, 180 volt-amperes per outlet. Divide a 20-amp, 120-volt circuit (2,400 VA) by 180 and you get 13. Apply the 80 percent continuous-load figure first and you get 10. That is where the familiar "ten outlets" number comes from, and it is a commercial calculation that got repeated until it sounded like a residential rule.
The Number That Does Constrain You
A 20-amp circuit at 120 volts carries 2,400 watts at absolute maximum. For any load running three hours or more continuously, the NEC limits you to 80 percent of the breaker rating, 16 amps, or 1,920 watts.
Sizing by load rather than count is straightforward: add up what will realistically run at the same time and keep the total under 1,920 watts.

Two 1,500 W space heaters on one 20-amp circuit is 25 amps and will trip the breaker. Twenty LED lamps and a few phone chargers is under 3 amps and will not. The count told you nothing. The load told you everything.
Where a Practical Limit Still Applies
Even with no code cap, most electricians keep residential general-purpose circuits to somewhere between eight and twelve receptacles. Not because of a rule, but because it keeps a single tripped breaker from taking out half a floor, and it leaves headroom for whatever the next owner plugs in.
The other practical constraint is box fill. Every conductor, device and clamp in a junction box counts toward a volume allowance, and a long daisy chain through shallow boxes runs out of legal space before it runs out of amps.
Rooms with Their Own Rules
Outlet count is unrestricted in general living space, but several areas carry specific requirements that override the general case.
- Kitchen countertops need at least two dedicated 20-amp small-appliance branch circuits, and those circuits must not serve anything outside the kitchen, pantry and dining areas.
- Bathrooms require a 20-amp circuit for the receptacles. It may serve a single bathroom entirely, or the receptacles in multiple bathrooms. Not both arrangements at once.
- Laundry needs its own 20-amp circuit serving nothing else.
- Dedicated appliances. Dishwasher, disposal, microwave, refrigerator in many jurisdictions. Are placed on their own circuits.
- ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection is required for kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, laundry areas, outdoors and anywhere near a sink.

20-Amp Versus 15-Amp
The two are not interchangeable, and the wire is the reason. A 20-amp circuit requires 12-gauge conductor. A 15-amp circuit allows 14-gauge. Putting a 20-amp breaker on 14-gauge wire is a fire risk of exactly the kind breakers exist to prevent, because the breaker will happily pass more current than the wire can carry.

Never fit a larger breaker to stop nuisance tripping. A breaker that trips repeatedly is reporting a real problem, too much load, or a fault. Upsizing it removes the protection without removing the cause.
How to Work Out What You Need
Rather than asking how many outlets are allowed, work the problem in the other direction.
- List what will run at once in the space, at its rated wattage, which is usually printed on the appliance or its plate.
- Total it and compare against 1,920 W for a 20-amp circuit, or 1,440 W for a 15-amp.
- Put the heavy hitters on their own circuit. Anything over about 1,000 W, heaters, kettles, shop tools, window air conditioners, should not share.
- Add headroom. Design to roughly 60–70 percent of capacity so the circuit tolerates whatever gets plugged in later.
- Check the wire before adding anything. If the existing run is 14-gauge, the circuit is a 15-amp circuit regardless of what breaker is fitted.
