A 3-way switch lets two switches control one light. Top and bottom of a staircase, either end of a hallway. It confuses people because there is no on and off position: either switch changes the state, so the toggle direction means nothing.
Once you understand that the whole circuit hinges on one terminal, the wiring becomes straightforward. That terminal is the <strong>common</strong>, and it is the only screw on the switch that is a different color from the others.
How the Circuit Actually Works
A 3-way switch is a single-pole double-throw device. Power comes into the common terminal and gets routed out to one of two traveler terminals. Flipping the switch sends it to the other traveler.
Two of these are wired back to back. The travelers connect switch one to switch two. Power enters the common of the first switch, leaves on whichever traveler is selected, arrives at the second switch, and reaches the light only if the second switch has selected that same traveler.
That is why either switch changes the state: each one is choosing which of two paths is live, and the light is on only when both switches happen to have picked the same path.
Identifying the Terminals
Every 3-way switch has four screws, and telling them apart is the whole job.
- The two travelers are interchangeable. Swapping them changes nothing about whether the circuit works. At worst it changes which toggle position corresponds to on, which is meaningless on a 3-way anyway.
- The common is not interchangeable. Getting it wrong is the single reason a rewired 3-way circuit misbehaves.
- Some switches label the common on the back of the body rather than beside the screw. Check both faces before assuming.

Which Wire Is Which in an Existing Box
Replacing a failed 3-way is much easier than wiring one from scratch, provided you record what was there.
Before you disconnect anything, turn off the breaker, verify the box is dead with a non-contact tester, then take a photograph. Then mark the wire that was on the common terminal. A wrap of tape, a twist tie, anything. That single piece of tape saves most of the trouble people have with this job.
If you have already disconnected everything and lost track, you can find the common with a multimeter. With the power off and the wires separated, set the meter to continuity. The traveler pair will show continuity to the corresponding pair at the other switch box. The wire that does not belong to that pair is either the incoming hot or the switch leg to the light.
Cable color is not a reliable guide. In a 3-way circuit a white conductor is frequently re-purposed as a hot or a traveler. Code requires it to be re-identified with tape or marker at both ends, but plenty of older installations skipped that. Never assume white means neutral in a 3-way box.
Where the Neutral Goes
The neutral does not pass through either switch in a conventional 3-way circuit. It runs from the panel to the light fixture directly. Switches interrupt the hot side only.
This matters increasingly, because smart switches usually require a neutral in the box to power their electronics. Many older 3-way boxes have no neutral present at all. Just the hot, the travelers and a ground. Current code requires a neutral at most switch locations, so newer homes generally have one, but a switch box in a house from the 1980s often will not.
If you are planning smart switches, open the box and look for a bundle of white conductors capped together at the back before you buy anything. If there is no neutral, your options are a smart switch designed to work without one, or running new cable.
Wiring It, Step by Step
Assuming a standard configuration with power entering the first switch box.
- Kill the breaker and verify the box is dead with a non-contact tester. Panel labels are frequently wrong.
- Switch 1: incoming hot from the panel to the common. The two conductors of the 3-conductor cable running to switch 2 go on the two traveler screws.
- Switch 2: the same two traveler conductors onto its two traveler screws. The wire running to the light goes on the common.
- Neutrals are joined through both boxes and run to the fixture. They connect to the light, not to the switches.
- Grounds to the green screw on each switch and bonded to the box if it is metal.
- Loop wires clockwise under the screws so tightening pulls them in, rather than using the back-stab holes.
If the light works from one switch but the other switch does nothing useful, the incoming hot or the switch leg is on a traveler terminal instead of the common. That is essentially the only way to get this wrong, and it is why marking the common wire first matters.
Four-way Switches, Briefly
Controlling one light from three or more locations adds a 4-way switch between the two 3-ways. A 4-way has four terminals and no common. It simply swaps the two travelers passing through it.
The 3-way switches always stay at the two ends of the run. Every additional location goes in the middle as a 4-way. Get a 4-way and a 3-way mixed up and nothing will work, so check the terminal count before wiring: four same-colored screws is a 4-way, three screws plus a ground with one odd-colored is a 3-way.
Common questions
Which wire goes to the common on a 3 way switch?
Either the incoming hot from the panel, or the wire running to the light. Depending on which end of the circuit that switch sits at. It is never a traveler. The common screw is the odd-colored one, usually dark bronze or black.
Does it matter which traveler wire goes where?
No. The two travelers are interchangeable, and swapping them has no effect on whether the circuit works. Only the common terminal is position-critical.
Why does my 3 way switch only work sometimes?
Classic symptom of the hot or switch leg being landed on a traveler terminal rather than the common. The light will then respond to one switch only in certain positions of the other. Move that wire to the common screw.
Can I use a regular switch as a 3 way?
No. A single-pole switch has two terminals and simply makes or breaks one connection. A 3-way needs three plus a ground so it can route power between two travelers.
Do smart switches work in a 3 way circuit?
Many do, but most need a neutral conductor in the box, and plenty of older 3-way switch boxes have none. Open the box and look for capped white conductors before buying, or choose a switch designed to work without a neutral.
